Women's 80's Handbags and Purses
The 80s was a revolution in the fashion world and even accessories like shoes and handbags seemed to be changing drastically. At the beginning of the 80s the Preppy Period was in charge and small little vinyl and leather clutch purses were all the rage.
Many of these handbags and purses also had a cute little bow, made from the same material which was added as an accent. These 80s handbags had a sleek silhouette and were offered in a variety of colors. You can still find them at vintage and thrift shops and the pastel shades and trim design give their age away.
Funky denim handbags also enjoyed a certain amount of popularity. These were the style of choice for those who did not enjoy the Prepster look During the 80s you could find an assortment of these that were available from top designers. You could also make your own. College students could take some denim cloth from old jeans and make an easy sling style bag to carry their make-up, pens, pencils and wallet. Most of these self expression carry-alls would have lace, ribbons, sequins or fringe added for decoration.

In the middle of the 80s Jane Birkin is given credit for inspiring the Birkin bag that is produced by the high end Hermes company. It is reported that she became disillusioned with the scarcity of practical leather handbags during the 80s. She wanted one that had style and refinement, but also the pockets and storage space that most women prefer. Ms Birkin described her ideal purse requirements right down to a lock that was secure but easy to open. The Birkin bag became one of the overnight sensations of the 1980s.
Handbags of the 80s were constantly evolving as were the clothing fashions. For a short time the Neon Color craze meant that almost all purses were being manufactured in glaring, garish shades of pink, green, orange and yellow. These colors were not meant to stay in fashion and their reign at the top was fairly brief.
Some of the top fashion designers for purses stayed true to their luxury line of accessories. Coach, Hermes, Aigner and others modernized and updated certain styles, but the demand for quality handbags remained strong and their customer base began to expand. By the latter part of the 80s it was ultra chic to have a purse sporting a well known designer label in your hands or on your shoulder.
