Buckles that carried the Harley insignia or name became extremely collectible as were those that looked like war eagles. Surprisingly this rough and tumble image was even taken into the office workplace. For a time you could find some independent minded males who would add a large, eye catching biker style belt buckle to their usually somber dark pants and jacket ensemble.
Belt buckles that had cartoon images like Betty Boop, the Road Runner and Tweety Bird on them also found plenty of takers. During the mid to late 80s unusual belt buckles had become so trendy that they were popping up everywhere. At flea markets there were dealers who had tables set up that featured only belt buckles for people to rummage through.
Large, bold symbols were the ones that most men wanted to wear, and often the size of the buckle would overwhelm the belt to which it was connected. Bling-Bling “a la Mr T” also influenced many of men’s belt buckle designs in the first of the 80s. These accessories were meant to get attention and they did this with an “in your face” attitude.
Sayings, mottos, slogans and names were commonly seen on belt buckles during the decade of the Eighties. Men could special order a heavy, ornate buckle and have their name spelled out in big, block letters. There were some classic, elegant belts made by high end designers with traditional buckles and clasps; but men wanted to create personal fashion statements just as much as women.
The comic character of “Calvin” from the newspaper cartoon “Calvin and Hobbs” was one of the favorite designs often seen on men’s belts throughout much of the 80s. It was also impossible to overlook the cowboy and Western influence. There were many heavy silver belt buckles made during these years and more than a few of them also included turquoise settings in the design.
