80s Style Blazers and Sportcoats for Men

Men’s blazers and sport coats were going through some real evolution during the 80s. Although the women’s suits could match them shoulder pad for shoulder pad, men’s fashions were not striving for a more masculine look during these years. Instead time and effort was spent to refine the classic elegance of many of those being produced by high end designers.

During the 80s men were treated to a treasure trove of suits, sport coats and blazers made from fine, natural materials like wools, cottons and silk.  Tailored clothing was popular and mixing and matching jackets and coats with both jeans and dress pants was putting the male population right at the top of the fashion wave. Those polyester leisure suits of the 70s would thankfully rarely rear their heads in the more stylish world of the Eighties male.

The jacket lapels on most of the men’s fashion became thinner or non-existent. The three piece suit had lost appeal with the public and designers were now hard at work combining a more casual style in their latest lines. Blazers were single breasted and yes, the leather patches on the elbows were still being sported during this decade.

Deconstructed linen blazers were a huge hit as men tried to emulate the same cool hip attitude portrayed by Don Johnson on Miami Vice. These coats were found in an array of pastel colors but white was the winning choice by the public, “hands down”. Men who wanted to look like Detective Sonny Crockett would wear this new style anywhere with a new found cockiness and confidence.

The preppy look was still a successful style during the Fashion Conscious 80s. One only had to look at "Family Ties" and see what Michael J Fox was wearing in order to grasp the idea of what they needed to add to their own wardrobe. The blazers, jackets, sweaters and sportcoats worn by Fox were homage to some of the top names in male fashion.  Dark colors and subtle earth tones reigned supreme in the world of the young preppies.

Although there were plenty of additional jackets and outerwear choices in the men’s department during the 80s the brands like IZOD, Chaps, Ralph Lauren and Bill Blass continued to enjoy huge success. Suddenly men seemed to have half a dozen or more sportcoats and blazers as opposed to only one or two. Now the males were discovering a true pleasure in showing the world their own “Sharp Dressed Man” image.
