80s Coats, Sweaters and Jackets...from Wacky to Wonderful
The signature jacket of the 80s was one that carried the name of Members Only. There was no one age group that sported this trendy fashion style; it seemed to appeal to all age levels. During this decade, it seemed as though every male in the country had at least one of these simple and practical jackets included in their wardrobe.
Strangely enough, you were not a member of anything but the group buying this outerwear, but that was more than ample reason for guys to make sure they were part of this fashion conscious gang. If you have ever seen these 80s era jackets, you might be surprised to hear just how popular they were. These were basically a “plain and utilitarian” garment that offered a collar with snaps, a zippered front, and a small, unassuming label. The preppies all adored the jacket and we can understand this; but even guys with more colorful and outrageous clothing selections had at least one of these quite modest Members Only jackets.
Another jacket choice that was certainly popular with men was the bomber jacket. These rough and ready items were made to look like those worn by WWII pilots. The distressed leather and attached insignias were totally cool and wearers could keep warm and comfortable in style. As more and more of these were sold the designs began to reach the extremes where almost more emblems and insignias were present than jacket leather. Today many people still are very excited to discover one of these items at a second hand shop or in the back of someone’s closet. The look of most of these jackets is still compellingly “cool”.
Topcoats hit the scene again and many of these were made from cashmere or other top quality wools. Businessmen found that these added flair and polish while keeping them warm at the same time. Down coats were another fashion find of the 80s and by the end of this decade you could find fat, fluffy down coats that fit from your neck to your ankles.
Cardigan sweaters, pullovers, V-necks and vests were all popular 80s selections for men and many of these can just as easily be worn today. Cable knit sweaters were a great choice that could be used to fire up the excitement of basic everyday casual. One of the ways people were wearing sweaters was as an accessory similar to a scarf. By loosely tying the sweater sleeves around your neck and letting the body of the sweater drape your back you could easily create the casually elegant style made popular by magazines and movies.
Blazers were another trendy look of the 80s and men could wear them with as much gusto and style as females. Pushing up the sleeves to the elbows was considered a very “up to the minute look”. Linen sports jackets with an unstructured style were yet one more hip look that was seen being worn with different amounts of success. When paired with pleated, looser fitting pants and a pastel T-shirt the look was smokin’ hot a la Miami Vice.
