The 1980s were a time of excess in styles, taste and fashions. For a short while everything was bigger and splashier. Big hair was in and for women big shoulders were in. Clothing was made with shoulder pads that made some females look like linemen for a football team.
Yes, this was an expressive, expansive time, and the coats and jackets worn by women in the 80s reflected this. While some of the designs were outrageous, they were definitely far from boring. Let’s take a look back at some of the top choices of fashion divas during the Exciting Eighties.

Music was hitting mainstream America hard and people wanted clothing like the singers were wearing. Michael Jackson was King of Pop Music during much of the 80s and he had a huge influence on styles. The leather jackets that he wore in some of his videos spawned millions of imitators. The black jacket worn in “Beat It” was seen as being “edgy and cool” and it became extremely popular. Jackson also wore a red leather jacket in another video. This jacket was knocked off and produced in red leathers or vinyl. It became another 80s style that many people felt they had to have.
Jeans jackets made of washed denim material were also a must have by teens and young adults. Many of these jackets were embellished with sequins, emblems and colorful designs. The denim look was one of the hottest of all the 80s styles and even top fashion designers were involved. A denim jacket that was a “designer original” could cost several thousand dollars. These jackets often had stunning and colorful designs on the back that were made with beads or embroidery. There were even many of these denim garments that were sleeveless with raveled material at the shoulders to give it that rougher, “muscle” look. You could even buy jeans jackets that were designed to be worn over evening wear.
Jackets and coats made of leather or suede were also a favorite choice of people in both big cities and small towns. Even these jackets had the big shoulder padding included. Long fringe was often seen dangling from the sleeves and backs of suede jackets and for a time this was one of the hottest looks on the market.
Trench coats were just another way for the fashion conscious public to express themselves during this decade. The styles coats and jackets worn by women in the 80s were available in dozens of unique and fun looks. Jelly jackets and bubble vests; thick down coats; Members only jackets; and crocheted coats were all part of the decadent Eighties.
