Music and fitness both had some amazing influences on 80s fashions and consumers had fun wearing an assortment of styles and designs. Here are a few of the looks that were very popular during that decade.
• Acid and Stonewashed Jeans
• Tight Fitting Jeans, Pants, and Shorts
• Parachute Style Pants
• Corduroys
• Zip Leg Pants
• Spandex Pants
• Tight, Bright Leather Pants
• Leggings instead of Pants
• Exercise Leotards, legwarmers and Scrunchy Style Socks
Three pop culture icons that helped create some of the 80s fashion looks by their own choices of clothing:
• Madonna
• MC Hammer
• Jane Fonda
When you look back at the 80s many people are struck by the polar opposite of the parachute pants and the skinny legs and tight fit of many other jeans. These 2 styles are very representative of how different and unique the fashions were. Extreme looks were definitely “IN”. Some of these styles did not enjoy a long run of popularity but each one at least received “15 minutes of fame”.
Bright colors and body hugging design was what people were looking for during much of the 80s. Spandex and leather were used to create many of the hot new looks that women wanted.
Jeans, pants, shorts and even exercise gear created huge revenues for the manufacturers. The best sellers were those that sported high-end designer names. People did not seem to mind paying the extra bucks to wear someone’s label on their bottom.
Although the parachute style and harem pants had a brief run in the limelight, the tighter fashion styles prevailed. There were some more tailored, classic jeans, and shorts available, but the desire by most people was to show off their bodies. This helped boost the fitness and exercise craze into high gear.
When it came to working out women wanted to be just as style conscious and they shelled out big bucks for high-end exercise fashion. Colorful leotards, tights, leggings, and legwarmers hit the market with a bang. People now looked as good inside a gym as they did on the street.
