Women Could Jump and Jive in 80s Jumpsuits
Fashion in the Fabulous 80s was a mix of styles and influences that shifted and changed in an almost constant motion. One of the feminine styles that was commonly seen was the 80s style jumpsuits. In the late 60s and early 70s Elvis Presley had made jumpsuits his choice for on stage performances but women were about to make the style their own.
These one-piece outfits gave females a comfortable garment that combined splashy fashion and practicality into a unique look. Many women loved their slacks but yearned to look more stylish at the same time. The 80s jumpsuits was about to make a fashion statement for millions who wanted something new and “wearable.”

At the beginning these jumpsuit styles were a little on the plain side and the material choices were few and far between. Women soon discovered that the design of some of the one-piece styles gave them a long, lean look. The ability of some of the 80s jumpsuits to camouflage undesirable body bulges helped propel the demand for more of them to be made.
Soon fashion conscious females were able to purchase these jumpsuits in lots of different designs. There were one piece outfits made with wider, flaring legs that gave the wearer the appearance of being in a long skirt. Other models could even be converted from a skirt to long pants because of snaps that were added. Sexy divas could even locate one-piece jumpsuits with plunging necks or backs. Instead of one size fits all, the rush was on to provide this look in dozens of different and interesting styles.
One of the 80s jumpsuits that was exceptionally desirable was the style made with a halter bodice and draped material that flowed from the waist to the ankles. The legs were wide and did not cling to the thighs or legs. Due to the draped style, the overall look was one of total feminine elegance.
It was quite common to see these jumpsuits in bold colors, prints, and patterns. Geometric prints were hot and pale colors were pushed aside for brighter choices. Many of the jumpsuits had heavy appliqué work or sequins added to the bodice or neckline to make them pop. Some of the styles were backless, but they often had a plunging neckline. These styles might have just a halter bodice that tied at the neck or could have a wide sailor collar attached. These backless jumpsuits were often worn to many of the popular clubs that were operating during the 80s.
Women liked to wear their jumpsuits with an assortment of accessories. These included chunky jewelry pieces made of wood, plastic or metal. The fairly simple design of a one-piece outfit made it easy to pair with almost any jewelry desired. A shoe with a heel was one of the most common items of footwear to use with a jumpsuit. The added height added to the illusion of a leaner silhouette. Belts and sashes were often used to accentuate the waistline and women would try on dozens before settling on just the right look.
There were also summer rompers that used the one-piece jumpsuit design. These were simple, cool outfits that were easy to wear. Some styles would button, snap, or zip in the front. One of the more popular one-piece looks combined a pair of shorts with an attached halter that simply tied at the neck or around the chest. One-piece terry cloth rompers were also extremely popular during the Extreme 80s fashion years.
