80s Lingerie Was Used for More than Lounging
Lingerie styles have always evolved along with other fashions and this was no different during the 80s. This decade is remembered for being a time of excess and this was clearly evident when you look at lingerie of the 80s. Glamour and high fashion influence was controlling the ready to wear fashion industry. Women longed to have this same look when it came to their more personal lingerie choices.
Peignoirs and nightgowns ramped up the wow factor with the addition of lots of lace and beading. Sexy styles and femininity were suddenly becoming the hallmarks for lingerie fashions. Even appliqués and trimmings of gold and silver threads were used in creating lingerie with plenty of glitz. Animal prints on gowns and robes were also popular fashion selections in the lingerie department. The large shoulder pads were very fashionable for women’s suits and jackets in the 80s, and smaller versions were even used in some peignoirs and bathrobes.

Two of the shows on television that were popular in the 80s were “Dynasty” and “Dallas”. Almost all women suddenly wanted the lingerie that they saw the main female characters strutting about in. If Lucy, Pam, Alexis, or Sammy Jo wore it on television females demanded the same boudoir styles. The lingerie departments of all major retailers were thrilled as their sales began to rise even higher.
Bold and sassy colors also came alive during this time and these shades were seen in lingerie of the 80s. Gowns, panties, and bras were now available in all stores in a host of sizzling designs and colors. It was common to see vivid, fire engine red, stunning emerald green and sapphire blue lingerie pieces showcased at your favorite department store.
Keeping up with the idea that bigger was better helped boost the sales of the new padded bras too. The lingerie fashions of the 80s had more than a few bras that were made to give the illusion of ample assets to any form and figure. Even full figured bras were often made with a little extra padding included. Designs, colors, and material choices for lingerie in the 80s had suddenly become more daring and risqué and women wanted a chance to wear them all.
Another change in lingerie fashions of the 80s came about as a result of the influence of pop music and Madonna. This self proclaimed “Boy Toy” hit the TV screens and radio waves during the 1980s and set off a lingerie revolution immediately. It suddenly was “The Style” to wear lingerie as clothing or at least wear some pieces on the outside of your clothing. Garters, bras, thigh high stockings, and bustiers had been available to women to wear under their clothing but now ladies began to flaunt their underwear as well as their curves.
Women enjoyed the changes in lingerie fashions during the 80s era. They suddenly had many choices of items to wear and the pieces could be found easily. Colors and seductive designs had brought lingerie out into the light of day. During these years plain white, cotton lingerie was put on the back burner and the hot new lingerie pieces of the 80s were allowed to sizzle.
