80s Pants Put Men at the Front of the Fashion World
People who did not enjoy the excitement and exuberant extravagance of the 80s may find it hard to understand why so many different styles of clothing and fashion were embraced by the public. It seems as though the dreary 70s were being pushed to the side of the road and optimism was brightly shining through the fashion clouds.
New technologies, President Reagan’s upbeat charm and a positive economy all had a part to play in the new look of fashion. Music was exploding on videos and across cable channels, new youth oriented movies were hitting the big screen and on television, we were watching as the rich and famous showed us how to “live the good life”. Women’s and men’s clothing changed with the time and even a simple pair of men’s pants was going through a new and unique evolution.
Corduroy pants or “cords’ as they were affectionately known were the comfort pants of the 80s. These were undoubtedly the pants favored by many of the youth on campus and even older people could find fashionable styles made from this fabric. Of course, these were not the only pants design that was available.
Sweat pants and outfits were the workout gear everyone considered a must have. Men and women were both wearing these to do grocery shopping, go to the movies and when contemplating heading to the gym. The colors and styles were more modern and appealing than the ones seen in the 70s and they rose quickly in popularity. The legs now had elastic at the bottom that made them fit better without dragging the ground. Different lightweight material was used which made them more comfortable and then zippers were added at the legs so that getting these pants on and off was even easier than ever.
Acid wash pants, parachute pants, and straight legged jeans were all pushing the style card into fast forward when it came to men’s wear. At long last, guys were able to express themselves by hitting the club and party circuit in more than just one or two styles of pants.
For the more classic minded gentleman, there were designer suits by the top names in the field. Pinstriped trousers were very commonly seen in the business setting. Pleated pants were another style that gained ground during the 80s. The perennial favorite continued to be jeans when it came to men’s pants. The decade of the 80s saw the pale blue fabric outpacing the darker indigos across the country. The washed out, faded jeans were considered a must by men who wanted to dress in the very latest fashions.
