Throughout the years there have been many different versions of women’s rompers and playsuits. The one piece garments that were being designed and sold in the 80s offered women of all ages and sizes a comfortable and stylish outfit with a sassy, vibrant attitude.

Some of the most common rompers were made of “easy to care for” terrycloth and they had no shoulders, neck, or fasteners. There were even little wrap around skirts that were made to match. Solid colored rompers were one of the top sellers, but polka dots and other brightly colored patterns were also popular. The romper would stay in place due to the elastic material that was sewn at the waist and chest. There were some that also had spaghetti shoulder straps that could be used if a little extra support was in order.

Rompers traditionally have a loose fit noted in the hips and thigh areas for maximum convenience and comfort. Because there were no sleeves the design made it a perfect choice to wear around the house, out in the yard, to the beach or for lounging around a pool. The material was cool enough to be comfortable even on the hottest days of summer and women found it useful to wear separately or as a beach cover-up.

Some women were wearing baby doll rompers which were a little different from the ultra casual terrycloth versions. This sexier romper style often had a zipper or buttons at the front, and the top resembled a sleeveless blouse. These baby doll rompers were a little dressier and could be worn in a variety of settings. While some women would use these as at home wear, many others would pair the outfit with stiletto heels for a dynamite look for nightclubs or dance floors.

The fresh, exuberant look of the baby doll romper was accented by flounces or ruffles around the bust, or along the front or neck of the garment. This style of romper was usually worn to clubs or casual parties. The material for these might be polyester, silks or satins.

Playsuits were also available during the 80s, and there were lots of different styles. These outfits were very popular and totally fun to wear. The one piece design usually had snaps, buttons or a zip front. The bottom was made with a crotch, but because of the roomy legs it looked much like a mini skirt. Playsuits with bold geometric prints and neon colors were available but most women preferred those with a more feminine or playful look.
