Scarves and Shawls From The 80s

Luis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermes, and other top fashion designers were signing their names to 80s accessories that included many scarves and shawls. The 80s was a decade that is often identified by the sheer number of trendy changes that was occurring on a regular basis. Several times each year there were new style ideas taking place throughout the tumultuous world of ready to wear fashion. This was really a time when many fashion designs seemed to enter the front door and rush right out the back of the room within hours.

Cowl necked scarves and shawls were one of the hit fashion trends of the 80s. This was a highly flattering look for most women because it had a slimming effect on the face. Colorful, ornate pins were also in high demand because they provided women with a decorative way to hold their scarf of shawl in place.

In the 80s Power dressing was a must for many women who had high level jobs in the corporate world. This was a major factor that influenced many of the top designers who were working frantically to perfect their latest clothing and accessory lines.

As females broke through many of the glass ceilings in the business world they wanted to look professional as well as chic. The new Power Suits for women were ready to be purchased and worn but it was necessary to find just the right accessories to make it complete. Scarves and shawls were paired with tailored suits in the 80s and the new combination was both powerful and glamorous.

The styles of clothing being seen in the 80s corporate world were much more sedate and elegant than some of the more trendy items that were seen in more casual settings. The addition of accessories like paisley shawls and scarves could easily add fashionable flair and a splash of color to the female executive’s wardrobe. These accessories also allowed every woman to create a statement that reflected her personal style.

Some of the most popular scarves in the 80s were large and square in shape. These scarves were made from the finest wool or silk. You could find a scarf made from polyester, rayon or another synthetic that was suitable for casual wear, but only top quality materials were used by the top designers. Paisley shawls and scarves were some of the highest selling of all of these fashion forward accessories.

Both shawls and scarves were very successfully used to create more polished looks for many 80s outfits. While scarves had finished edges most of the shawls had fringe along their borders. Almost every female office worker wore a shawl or a scarf around her neck or draped over a shoulder at least once during the 80s. These accessories were so immensely popular that booklets could be bought that contained nothing more than dozens of different ways to tie and arrange scarves and shawls.

  1. I was born in 1985, but I still remember my mom’s power suits, a green one in particular, with oversized shoulder pads, big gold buttons, that she topped off with a shawl and black pumps….
