Highs and Lows of 80s Footwear Fashion

Fashionable footwear is a trend that is followed religiously by many style-setting divas. The 80s was one of the decades that produced shoes for every setting and mood. It was often difficult to find feminine shoe styles during the 70s and women were anxious to try on the newest looks. Here are a few of the top selling shoes that you could purchase during the Fabulous 80s.

Ballet style slippers made an appearance early in the 80s and this classic, flat footwear was a smashing success. Some of these shoes were made in a stiff, patent leather but most of them were made from softer, more pliable material. Women adored this new style of comfortable footwear and were buying ballet flats in every color. The look was ultra feminine and many of these shoes had tiny bows included as a decorative trim.

We cannot ignore the platform shoes of the 80s. The first platforms came out during the 70s but were extremely difficult for many women to walk in safely. The platform soles were about 4 inches high from toe to heel, which made maneuvering a complex task. The 80s platform soles had a 3-5 inch heel but the sole tapered gradually and the toe section was generally little more than 1-2 inches in height. Wearers found that this design was much easier to handle. There were also some platform soles used for boots that followed the same basic styling.

Wedge shoes were another fashion score during the 80s and are still popular today. With the wedge style, the heel and insole were elevated sharply to attract attention to a woman’s shapely calf. This created a triangular or wedge shaped sole and was more comfortable and stylish than the platform look.

Jogging and aerobic footwear was another shoe fashion that reached astonishing heights of success in the 80s. Adidas, Nike, Reebok, and Puma were all names that people wanted on their “tennis shoes”. The solid color sneaker was pushed to the side as bright stripes and neon hues took over. Even the shoestrings were made in matching colors and many of them had designs of their own.

Fad shoe styles of the 80s included the best selling and inexpensive “jellies”. These shoes were made of a rubbery plastic that was lightweight, cheap, and colorful. The most popular of the jelly shoes were those made in an open mesh design. High-heeled ankle boots made their appearance during the 80s and so did shoes with unusual heel designs. One short-lived style was a shoe with the heel point located under the middle of the heel instead of at the back.
