80s Skirts for Women
Women’s skirts were revolutionized more than once during the dramatic 80s period. This was a time when styles were covering the entire spectrum from “Sleazy Chic” to “Haute Couture”. Although many of the skirts during the earliest years had modest hemlines it was only a short time before the hems would begin a roller coaster ride that defied anyone to keep pace.
The women who had important jobs in business settings generally shared a more conservative style ethic. Their skirts were more serious and sedate with knee length hemlines or hems that only edged an inch or two above the knee at most. These were straight fitting skirts that incorporated a small back pleat or slit. Most of these were paired with blazers or business style jackets.

The back slit skirt was taken to new heights under the guidance of one or two designers and some slits were almost 12 inches long. Although these did not enjoy the popularity of their more modest cousins, this slit skirt design prompted slips and half-slips to be made with their own little slit at the back of the hem to match the outer garments.
There were an abundance of new looks for skirts during these fashion frantic years. The high waisted skirt appealed to those with more slender frames, but there were dozens of other styles to try. The Gunne Sax line produced many of the more romantic skirts that were simple in design and longer in length. The pencil skirt was probably the most fitted of all skirts other than ones that were made from Spandex. Even the dirndl skirt and jumper provided women with alternatives when it came to ready to wear outfit choices.
Of course the tailored styles preferred by Nancy Reagan had a heavy influence in the types of skirts that were being designed, particularly in those early 80s years. Conservative elegance was the key phrase being used by many top designers. Peplum skirts became a very hot fashion look, particularly since these skirts were being worn by stars of shows like “Dallas”, “Knots Landing”, and “Dynasty”. The distinctive flounce at the waist or upper hip added a feminine touch that many women could not resist.
For those that preferred the trendy look the bubble skirt was a great option to try. This ruffle hemmed design created a “poufy” skirt and teens and younger buyers loved it. Pleated skirts and even the kilted skirt both were updated and re-introduced to the fashion public. Shorter skirts once again gained in popularity during the mid to late 80s. Soon miniskirts and “cheerleader” style skirts were vying for their share of the ready to wear market.
