Choosing the most complimentary sunglass frames was only one of the many concerns and choices of women in the 80s. There were dozens of new styles and shapes to browse through and try on. Suddenly sunglasses shot to the top of fashion and people were willing to pay well over $100 to purchase some of the best designer styles.
Ray Bans were a very popular sunglass selection during these years and consumer demand grew rapidly. It was soon easy to find small kiosks devoted to only Ray Ban eyewear at many large malls. One of the most desirable styles of sunglasses was the Aviator look. These glasses paired gold or silver colored frames with oversized lenses and was considered ultra chic.
Carrera was another name in the sunglass fashion world that hit it big in the 80s with the Aviator style. Two of Carrera’s most popular Aviator styles were Champion and Safari. Today the company is even offering new sunglasses that are made from the molds used for the production of the 80s models. Calvin Klein sunglasses were another high end entry into the eyewear market. Klein was successful at creating chic looking sunglasses that women loved to purchase and wear.
Favorite 80s lenses included those that were mirrored and others that were almost solid black. The gradient lenses were still in high demand and the quality of UV protection in sunglasses was improved drastically during the decade of the 80s. Every store had sunglasses with Polarized or gradient lens that were offered in an array of colors. Shoppers could select sunglasses with lens to match any outfit they had in their closet. Amber, pink and blue lens were all the rage, and almost everyone had several pairs of sunglasses that they wore… even in the cooler months.
The frames of many of the 80s style sunglasses were made to be just as bold and big as clothing fashion was at this time. Oversized frames in many geometric shapes were popular. Wearers of sunglasses might be seen sporting lenses that fit into frames that were styled like circles, squares, rectangles or some that were exaggerated cats’ eyes. The frames often were decorated with polka dots, rhinestones or gold trim.
