Men Knew How To Tie One On in the 80s
Guys found that the 80s was a time when males could indulge in a little style of their own. Fashion was playing up to the men of the world and even corporate and main stream clothing was looking a little more chic and modern. Not only were shoes, pants, shirts and jackets getting to walk on the wild side, even men’s ties were suddenly “busting out” with a whole new vibe.
One of the most obvious changes seen in fashion accessories for men was in the smaller design size. While the shoulder pads in women’s fashion were getting super-sized, it was in men’s wear where the fashion choices were heading in the opposite direction. The “skinny tie” was suddenly in, and with its new and dramatically different “catwalk size” this 80s accessory was making the larger ties look extremely dated.

The skinny ties of the 80s were commonly made of tweed, or open knit cotton or wool. There were some made from polyesters or silk but the tweed and knit ties gave the appearance of natural, casual elegance that was the hallmark of the Preppy Look. Some of the skinniest ties were only about 1-1 ½ inches in width and there were a few that were even narrower.
With the knit ties, the shape was not only narrower, the end of the tie was squared off. Many people considered this to be a look known as the “rockabilly”. The square-end, knit tie was probably the one look that seemed to be everywhere. Men wore this to college, on dates or for work. It was not uncommon to see guys on the street with short-sleeved shirts that sported open collars and one of these ties that was only loosely tied about the neck. Somehow many young men felt more polished when they had on one of these 80s ties, even if they were not really “wearing” it.
The Club scene was hot during the 80s and shiny, metallic prints were popular when you wanted to look hip and trendy. Many of the more decorative ties from the 80s were usually a little wider than the skinny tie design, but still they were drastically different from the big, broad ties of the 70s. People hitting the club circuit might even don a tie over a plain tee shirt and be right on top of the latest style craze.
Geometric designs, paisley prints, and subtle stripes were all available on ties from labels like Stringbean, Cervantes, Ches Roffe, and Expressions. Designers like Ralph Lauren and Armani continued to make high-end neckties from quality fabrics. These ties bowed to the more narrow fashion look, but the subtle designs and narrow pinstripes evoked feelings of pure class all the way.
