Big Hair, Big Shoulders, Big Tops.....this was the 80s

Blouses and tops worn in the 80s came in dozens of different styles. Unlike some of the earlier fashion decades it often seemed as though the 80s designers were manic about their lines of clothing. Everything was constantly changing and being revamped including sweaters, dresses and accessories.

Consumers were dazzled by the variety of clothing suddenly available. There was the Punk Look, the Preppy period, Haute Couture, Designer Chic, 80s Sleaze, Rock and Roll and Spandex. Because blouses and tops go with so many different outfits women could easily mix and match them to create some even more unusual looks. Cultural influences were also on the rise during the 80s and many ethnic influenced designs were rolled onto the runway.

You could see women in cropped tops and mini skirts in an office or at a club. Wearing mesh or fishnet style tops over lingerie was a style that was a favorite of many club goers. Ruffled blouses were a major fashion hit in the 80s and the ruffles might be added at the neck, wrist or down the front.

In the 90s there was a famous Jerry Seinfeld episode that involved the infamous Puffy Shirt. This style of shirt was very reminiscent of some of the tops worn in the 80s. Puffed sleeves and puffy shoulders were very common and once again shoulder pads were inserted to make sure you that even the most petite women had that exaggerated football player appearance.

A favorite style of top that women chose to pair with jeans and mini-skirts was the long Tee shirt. These tees were made to fit well below the waistline. It was not uncommon to see a young woman use one of these long Tee shirts as a dress. They just had to cinch an extra wide belt at the waist and they were ready to go.

Some of the other tops and blouses that achieved prominence in the 80s were the sleeveless shirts and leather jackets. Shirts and tops that had the one shoulder or an off the shoulder look were also popular. Ocean Pacific and IZOD were two must have designer brands that everyone wanted seemed to want.

In the 80s younger people were also choosing lots of black leather tops and jackets that featured patches, medallions or chains. Neon colored tops in sizzling orange, yellows, greens and blues seemed almost fluorescent at night. Blouses, tops and tee shirts that had pictures and logos of rock bands were one of the hottest selling items of the decade. Oversized Tee shirt tops were paired with slacks and shorts. These tops had shoulder pads and usually were heavily embellished with metallic fabrics, sequins or beading.
